Bedding Modifications to Consider

Sleeping well at night and benefiting from regular sleeping cycles help you feel better and keep your health in check. Of course, there are many factors that contribute to a relaxing, undisturbed night of sleep.

These range from investing in a quality mattress to making your sleeping environment calm, dark, and free of TVs and other distractions.

Specifically, what you do with your bed and bedding can make a world of difference. Here are my top three recommendations that contribute to a better night's sleep.

1. Buy a New Bed:
If you're sleeping on a 15-year-old bed and always seem to wake up groggy and sore, it's time for a new mattress. There are a wide array of mattress choices that range from a custom-made mattress to a futon to a full-on memory foam bed.

2. Accessorize Your Bed:
This can pertain to any bedroom accessory such as using softer sheets, ergo-dynamic pillows or other bedding element to ensure your sleeping alignment is both comforting and proper. You might opt to get feather-down pillows, a new comforter, and/or buy a mattress pad. Any accessory that makes you more comfortable can be an upgrade from the standard mattress and sheets you have now.

3. Sleeping Right:
Even with bedding modifications such as new pillows and skin-soft sheets, if you're sleeping at an odd angle or have your head propped up too high, you're putting your sleep and health at risk.

If you are experiencing back aches, a sore neck or are always tired when you awaken, consider changing the way you sleep at night. Think about the positioning of your body so your back, shoulders and hips are adequately supported. If you sleep on your side, try stuffing a pillow between your knees to better align your spine throughout the night.

In addition, make sure your pillow is not too firm or too soft. It should comfortably support your head and feel good to you.

Your bed should represent a place that is nice, comfortable and soothing. And, it should help you get more restful sleep and wake up feeling refreshed.
