Can Hemp's CBD Oil Help with Sleep Issues?

Cannabidiol or CBD oil is getting a lot of attention for its potential to help mitigate a variety of health concerns, including some sleep-related issues. In this article, Alex Deckard  of Aeroflow Naturals discusses the option of using CBD as a natural remedy to help with sleeplessness.

Do you experience that "I can’t sleep" feeling? It's the feeling of frustration as you lay awake at night, tossing and turning, wondering when you will finally fall asleep, stay asleep and get the rest you need. If so, you aren’t alone. Millions of people around the globe experience difficulty sleeping. If you’ve tried other natural approaches without results, you may want to look into CBD oil as a natural remedy.

About CBD

CBD is one of the many cannabinoids found in hemp. It is unlike the cannabinoid in marijuana, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), that is responsible for the mind-altering high that is associated with marijuana. Rather, CBD from hemp does not have any psychoactive effects and will not appear positive on a drug test.

There are a variety of ways to take CBD oil, all of which may help your endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is responsible for regulating normal bodily functions such as sleep, appetite, and mood. Once the ECS receptors interact with CBD, it possibly assists in relieving pain, insomnia, anxiety, nausea, and more. The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has not done any studies on the effectiveness of CBD as a medical treatment

How CBD May Help You Sleep

There are a number of ways CBD might be able to help you fall asleep, stay asleep, and benefit from more quality rest.

  • Studies suggest that CBD may have a beneficial role in relieving anxiety to help your mind relax. By relieving worry, you may be able to got to sleep more easily and quickly.

  • Stress is a major contributor to insomnia, as it stimulates your brain to either keep you awake or throw off your natural sleep cycle. CBD may help your body better react to stress in order to remain more calm and relaxed.

  • During sleep, your body cycles through five sleep stages to feel rested. The first four stages are comprised of non-rapid eye movement sleep and the fifth stage is when rapid eye movement (REM) sleep occurs. An entire sleep cycle with the five stages lasts about 90 minutes. Your body needs to spend the correct amount of time in each cycle to properly rest, and CBD may be able to contribute to better, more structured sleep.

  • Pain and inflammation can prevent you from getting comfortable. By helping to relieve inflammation, CBD oil may help reduce the swelling and chronic pain that keeps you awake – or wakes you up frequently during the night.

Finding the Best CBD Oil

Consult with your healthcare provider if you are interested in trying CBD oil as a natural remedy. Look for full-spectrum CBD oil. It contains a broad range of endocannabinoids, essential nutrients, and turpentines from the original plant that are able to work together to produce the maximum benefits. In contrast, an isolate only contains one type of compound and can be synthetically made in a lab.

Beware of false marketing claims. To push sales, some suppliers will say their CBD products are an amazing cure-all with no data to support their statements. Reputable suppliers will back up their facts with studies or lab results.

Businesses can run into trouble when they make false claims about the health benefits of CBD, or when they add CBD to food. Some cities and states have moved to control how CBD is sold and moved to crack down on edible products containing CBD, as it is not been “deemed safe as a food additive.”  Companies also can’t legally make unproven health claims about CBD.

Products being sold as CBD are unregulated. The current evidence suggests that the active ingredient in CBD oil is safe, though there is potential that it could have serious interactions with certain medications.

Is CBD Legal?

CBD that is extracted from hemp and is void of THC has been legal in the U.S. since the Agriculture Improvement Act was passed in December 2018. Yet, CBD that is extracted from other cannabis plants is illegal on the federal level, but may be legal in certain states.

Therefore , if you are considering using CBD, confirm the legality of sale and use of CBD in your locale. Be aware that statements about the use of CBD oil have not been evaluated by the FDA.  Also, talk with your doctor about CBD oil before you purchase.
